The National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) today claimed that the reports regarding the issue of return of power projects to J&K had been misinterpreted.
Saying that an RTI activist had raked up the issue, stating the NHPC had earned Rs 19,000 crore in the past 14 years, the NHPC said the reports had forgot to mention that the corporation had spent Rs 18,215 crore for the development of its projects in J&K.
In a statement issued today, the NHPC said newspapers had tried to misguide the local public who were not aware of the matter. “The NHPC is a Central government organisation. However, reports have projected the NHPC as a private company. The NHPC is bound to abide by the rules and pay structures, allowances and perks as decided by the Government of India. Not a single rupee can be paid extra to any employee beyond the guidelines of the Central government,” the NHPC statement said.
It added that the corporation had never sought any project in the state, saying that it was the Government of India and the J&K Government which entrusted it with the responsibility of construction of various hydro-electric projects.
The Kishanganga Project was the last project taken up by the NHPC independently in 2009 and since then no project could took off in the state except the extension of Baglihar Stage-I and Stage-II. Other major projects have not even been started due to various difficulties.
It further said during the construction of the projects, thousands of personnel were employed in various projects who were mainly from the state. The NHPC said these projects had been running for the past 30 years but there was not a single instance of failure of any structural component.
